A historical bridge in Reading, PA was recently rehabilitated. On top of the standard construction challenges like traffic control and maintaining structural integrity, the project team successfully managed significant architectural and historical preservation challenges not often seen on bridge construction projects. In addition to open-spandrel arches, reticulated balustrades (fancy railing for my fellow civil constructors) were rehabilitated in place and rebuilt in as close to original form when salvage wasn't feasible. This project was a blend of heavy civil construction methods and fine (relatively speaking) finish details. It's the right blend of architecture, engineering and construction to create an AEC recipe that a road, bridge and water infrastructure builder like me can get behind and appreciate.
