Do You Even Round?

To round or not to round. We all round numbers at some level but what level and detail is appropriate. It's a conversation many builders have had throughout their careers. When submitting proposals or pricing to clients, is rounding to the nearest penny, dollar or even ten dollars appropriate? The same questions apply to month forecasts and P&L statements. Accountants love pennies but they can bog down builders. Is that nickel, dime or dollar on your price or forecast going to impact the outcome of a multi million dollar (even a six figure) project? Statistically, the answer is no. So keep rounding or don't. Projects won't be won or lost and be in the red or black because of small rounding adjustments. Beware: Your sanity may come and go as you round to the nearest penny, though.
