We all know that person or have that person on our team that is almost never positive. They dump on new or different ideas and constantly second guess schedule and cost forecasts. They might even be a downer on existing processes that are succeeding.
In your ranking of most pessimistic people, did you include yourself? Are you the Debbie Downer in your team or life? Since we have more control over ourselves than others, there are a few things we can do to be less pessimistic ourselves and work to lead others by a positive example. We can practice gratitude by appreciating others and showing our thanks on a regular basis. Thank you via a conversation, e-mail or text works great. Next, we can savor the good by enjoying the positive moments. Don’t get stuck on a success or great moment, but don’t forget it and move on too quickly. Finally, we can also manage our self-talk. Make your inner monologue more positive and uplifting. Kind of like when Peter Pan had to think happy thoughts to fly in Hook, if we think happy thoughts, we have a much better chance for success.
