Top researchers are working to develop artificial intelligence for construction. Human intelligence is required to build the artificial intelligence that is forecasted to help construction pros build a better world in the years to come. Led by faculty from The University of Illinois, a multi-disciplinary team of AEC university/research and industry partners, has been awarded a National Science Foundation Grant to establish the National Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Construction. Industry partners will include engineers, architects, contractors, subcontractors, owners/clients and construction technology companies. Along with The University of Illinois, Carnegie Mellon University will provide researchers and innovators that focus on engineers, construction, architecture and computer science. There will even be construction industry focused venture capital involved.
"The goal is to identify key areas for the highest impact of AI in design, construction and operation of the built environment. The team will also actively engage in the development of AI methods and tools, as well as entrepreneurship education, to bring these solutions to the market."
Early work will focus on building a strong foundation of AI specific to construction and the built environment. As with a construction project, planning and organization up front on research projects pays dividends later on through more focused and more efficient resource usage. Starting right is key and will help the National Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Construction build a better world.
