Injury at Thanksgiving Meal Ruins Perfect Safety Record

Surprising source of jobsite injury.

In the spirit of the season and to celebrate a stellar jobsite safety record, a local jobsite held a Thanksgiving Dinner in the trailer before heading out for the long weekend. Everyone brought a dish or dessert to share and the superintendent (Kyle Saunders) deep fried a turkey. Ever cautious and always trying to lead by example, Mr. Saunders pencil whipped a short work plan to safely and properly deep fry the turkey. He wore a face shield and welder gloves during the initial turkey drop into the scalding oil, as well as, when he removed the turkey. Up to this point, everything went as planned and was uneventful. The turkey even cooked all the way through and was given a unanimous awkward thumbs up when Mr. Saunders interrupted eating to ask what everyone thought of his work.

Everyone then had dessert which mostly consisted of store bought confections. Other than pushing a couple of older workers into near diabetic shock, everyone had a good time with the sugary treats. Like good construction workers, they then cleaned up after themselves to keep the trailer tidy and maintain good overall jobsite housekeeping.

All but cleaned up, a couple of competitive laborers found the wish bone and proceeded to break the wishbone apart. Unfortunately, when the wish bone broke a shard of bone flew into a nearby worker's eye. As trained, the jobsite team quickly tried to flush the object out of the workers eye but it appeared to be imbedded. The injured worker was immediately rushed to the clinic where the bone fragment was removed and the doctor prescribed antibiotic drops. As a result, the jobsite experienced an OSHA recordable incident and shattered their perfect record to date.

When asked what could have been done to prevent the incident, Mr. Saunders noted that no PPE was worn which would have been noted and required had a work plan been developed for the wish bone activity. In his last statement for this article, Mr. Saunders stated, "We usually plan our work and work our plan but we got excited and in a hurry when the guys broke the wish bone on the way out of the trailer. We didn't this time and unfortunately one of our team members had a rough weekend."
