Innovation and Resilience: The Path to Better Infrastructure

What might transportation and transportation infrastructure look like under a Biden administration? A former Obama administration transportation official who is working with Biden's team says it will focus on resilience and innovation. Resilience in this plan means more robust infrastructure that is higher quality and/or lasts longer for less money. It also means infrastructure that works better during severe weather and is able to stay in place for a quick return to use after a severe weather event.

"You can expect [resiliency] to basically trickle through the federal program across the board."

On the innovation side of the potential Biden infrastructure plan, developing autonomous vehicle technology and further developing the infrastructure needed for widespread electric vehicle use are high on the list. Improved resilience and innovation will bring infrastructure investment dollars that help longer than just the initial investment. Obviously, it is good for construction, and the economy (as one of the largest industries in the US), to have a robust infrastructure investment and development plan. Even after construction is complete, dollars invested in infrastructure continue to have a positive impact on our nation and the communities around us. Strong infrastructure facilitates a productive economy for anyone that uses it (directly or indirectly). Looking past the fact that our nation isn't in a great position in regards to debt, spending on infrastructure is a good thing because it benefits so many people through jobs to engineers, construction pros and highway maintenance teams and by providing better and safer access to commerce for all of us which stimulates the economy which is also good for all of us.
