If you're like me you're a bit of a luddite when it comes to the latest construction technology application. For me, one thing I am still working to fully understand, grasp and eventually leverage to build a better world is the Internet of Things (IoT). I came across a recent article that helped make things slightly more clear for me. So what is the IoT?
"The internet of things is the internet for things, it is a way for our devices to connect through the internet in a similar way to how people already do."
Some potential benefits of connecting all devices and processes are:
Improved safety through tracking worker movements, locations and biometric measures.
More efficient resource management through location and usage tracking.
Better data collection and reporting which can help with equipment maintenance and on site work activity maximization.
Reducing insurance premiums by using IoT data to prove and justify reduced and lower premiums.
As with any new tool, technology or process, there are some common issues that IoT adoption must overcome to be successful.
Privacy and data security issues in regards to worker location and biometrics, as well as, securing data from poaching by bad actors outside of the company.
Price (bottom line) is a concern because full on jobsite IoT will require hardware, software and personnel training (steep learning curve) that is not cheap and can be time consuming.
As with any tool, IoT isn't the right tool for everyone right now. Parts of it may be right and with strategic implementation the required client and bottom line benefits will be there. Untile the time is right, construction pros can keep building a better world relatively internet free like our ancestors, the cave men.
