Most of us have had new hire training or discussions on the job that focus on office, trailer and site norms. This is often the stuff that is between the lines of detailed guidance in corporate and project SOP's. They are usually common sense type topics and may be influenced by the personality of team leaders and the team as a whole. A recent article called these unwritten rules the "It's ok list" as in it's ok to ______ (fill in the blank). Teams should consider at least four areas when putting together "It's ok lists."
Digital communication expectations
Emotional support
Psychological well being
Work styles
A few examples the article includes are things like "It's ok to____."
Not know everything
Ask why and why not
Ask the management to fix it (would currently be pretty gutsy to say this in the trailer)
Have a kid or dog make a cameo on a video call
Adjust hours to accommodate family needs and commitments
This process is pretty intriguing and might have a little pushback from rough and tough construction pros but in the long run would help teams understand each other and work better together as a team. For full details on "It's ok lists," check out the HBR article here.
