New Home Starts Down

In March, home starts are down quite a bit from a forecast earlier this year but still a little higher than last the actual numbers from March 2019. Response in the housing market to the Coronavirus didn't happen until late March so a more severe drop is expected in April. The housing market is known for big swings and boom/bust cycles so it's not surprising that things will likely drop more.

It's only a small observation set but several developments in the Phoenix area have slowed their rate of construction or completely stopped. Knowing this, contractors in markets that are more frequently considered "essential" should be looking to see if they can find and hire the best of the residential (and commercial) that are now looking for work to supplement their already strained and short manned project teams. This is even more important if contractors believe they will experience a bubble on the back side of the crisis related slowdown. With the right strategic planning and a little luck, contractors can position themselves to be better than ever by the end of the year.
