Please and Thank You

This is for the younger construction professionals who are trying to lead crews. It's a bit old fashioned but please and thank you still go a long way. So do asking questions about the work in general along with, "What about...," "What do you think...," and "Can you...." You don't have to boss people around or bluntly direct them to do things. When you are young, you don't have credibility and likely respect because you lack credibility. Respect can be gained while earning credibility by being polite, inclusive and showing a bit of deference to veterans who definitely know more about their specific niche than a young leader does. Treat people right and they might cut you a little slack and give you a good nickname. Plus, if you treat someone well and with respect and they don't treat you similarly, you know what kind of person they are.

I view this like the military where you have older NCOs to guide the young Officers. It never hurts to ask someone who has more experience than you what they think about a task.
