Given that the 2020 political cycle is getting rolling with the Iowa Caucuses, politics might be a frequent and serious or comical discussion depending on your point of view. When working in The Trailer, on the jobsite or in the office, what kind of politics do you encounter and use? I’m not thinking about government or presidential politics but the workplace politics we all navigate on a regular basis. Are you blunt but always brutally honest? Do you tell the truth but bend reality a bit to soften messages for certain people? How do you react when you brutal honest delivers a message to you? How about when a message is softened and slight obscures the full reality of the situation? Using the right politics can help message delivery. The right politics can help teams make the best decisions and take the best action.
With teams, basic facts are usually the best. Don’t oversell or demean during the delivery. At times, facts aren’t fun but the best decisions are made and the best action is taken with a full understanding of a situation based on full and accurate facts. Delivery of the facts seems to be most direct when the project safety, cost, schedule and cost are on the line on the jobsite or in The Trailer. Things soften a bit in the office or when working with external stakeholders. That being said the clearer the truth of a situation is conveyed, the better. Correct decisions can be made at the right time and then results can be tracked to make adjustments or better inform future decisions.
Do you and your teams play politics with facts or does everyone get straight to the facts and then deliver them openly and honestly?
