Remote Work: Trust Is the Prerequisite

In case you couldn't tell by now, I am a big fan of alternative work structures and environments. As remote work is gaining steam with everyone's "new normal," it is a popular thought topic for me.

Researchers from INSEAD have developed a series called "The Future of Management" where they discuss how culture and technology shape the manager's job. A big topic is remote work. As with many processes involving teams, trust is required for success. According to the series, trust can be built and maintained in remote work environments via routines and predictability. Incorporating regular check-ins and smaller or daily deliverables can build trust and track progress without micromanaging. Important in normal work environments, standards and processes that everyone understands and follows become critical. This helps get more consistent results and provides more quantitative standards for use in rating and judging deliverables, as well as, team and individual employee performance. The article contains a bucket load of additional information so check it out if you want to dive deeper into remote work and how to establish trust.
