Safety Starts at Home

In an effort to build culture and model the way on the site and in The Trailer, Kyle "Safety Man" Saunders, has begun implementing safety best practices at home and with his family. He firmly believes that if you wake up and start living safely before you even leave the house, you will work safely and come home to your loved ones at the end of the day.

Safety Man is a local Superintendent with Best of the Rest Construction who has been championing improved safety practices and standards on his jobsite. While he has seen improvement in the culture and safety numbers, he knows his team can do better and it starts with him as a leader. He thinks safety at work starts at home before the morning huddle and stretch and flex. When asked to elaborate Saunders said, "As a leader at home and work, it is my job to set the example. If I can live safely both on and off the clock, my family and team can too. I need to lead the way."

Because safe work practices haven't been taken from the jobsite to the homestead in a

full scale before, Safety Man is starting small. He is talking with his family about what they think is safe and unsafe as well as what they can do to maintain or improve family safety. As he gets a better understanding of his home safety needs, he will develop standard operating procedures.

Saunders is concerned with how well new safety standards will be understood and used by his children who range in age from 3 to 9 years old. In explaining how we will make sure understanding and implementation of his new household standards will occur he said, "I plan to use tried and true posters and slogans. Of course I'll adapt them in ways that are understandable to my wife and kids but, I mean, if my 3 year old can't understand basic words and pictures, then maybe he needs to be in remedial level preschool next year." To make it easier for his kids to see and understand the slogans, he will post them at eye level for an average 6 year.

Initial posters and slogans will be focused on general safety and backyard safety. Safety Man is planning to make 100% glove use a requirement in the backyard. This is because hand/finger booboos and owies are frequently reported to occur there. To combat the number of incidents reported in the backyard, a "Glove Up & Grow Up" slogan will be posted on the back door. It will be posted just above the door knob which is right around eye level for a 6 year old.

When explaining his grand plan for implementing more safety standards Saunders noted that there have been a high number of near misses at home that are related to couch cannon balls and jumping on the bed. He's tried re-reading 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed with no change in behavior so he's going to have to get creative with his solutions. "I've got to come up with more ways to make my home and family safe and I know it sounds crazy but the safer I can get my household, the safer my job will be," said Saunders.
