This article caught my attention because it discusses an innovation building product and prefabricated construction methods. When developing a multi-family project, sandwich panels that used 5" of concrete on either side of 6" of insulation were design, fabricated and installed. The panels created a high level of temperature/thermal comfort and privacy. These sandwich panels were used with a few other design and construction methods to create the "world's largest Passive House structure." If you're not a residential construction pro like myself, and fairly oblivious to what a Passive House is, it is a house or living space that requires very little energy for space heating and cooling. Specific to this project, the energy saving innovations mean it requires 90% less energy for heating and cooling than similar buildings. This is an interesting use of precast concrete products to reduce building energy consumption. As a civil construction pro, I am interested in figuring out how to apply precast, prefabricated and modular construction process to our civil infrastructure. This article showed that new and different precast construction methods can be used in the right situations. Where do you think we can do more of that on the civil side of things?
