Seeking to Build Good Will, Crew Uses Golf Carts While Working in Retirement Community

When planning how to transport men and equipment on an upcoming pipeline project, a young superintendent and his engineer hatched the idea to use golf carts as their main mode of transport on the job. While this is odd anywhere, it is less odd because their plan will take place in a retirement community where gold carts are a standard mode of transport and a status symbol of sorts. These golf carts aren't your average putt putt course cart. They careen down the road at over 30 MPH, have horns, lights, music and other party accessories. The construction crew knows they will have lots of eyes on them when installing waterline through the neighborhood so the more they can show appreciation of and fit in with local customs, the better. A 55+ estimator (and covered by EOE age protections) is a little worried that their actions might be considered cultural appropriation of the retired living lifestyle. Undaunted by lifestyle appropriation concerns, the pipeline crew is planning to hold weekly, "Back in My Day," gatherings every Friday during lunch where "Old Timer" stories can be openly shared over fresh tea and lemonade.

An added incentive for local retirees to attend the weekly gatherings is free grandson services. A young engineer or intern will be available to help with any technology related issues like "What is a Smart Phone" and "My DirectTv won't record my shows." This engineer will also be available to help change a few light bulbs and dust behind hard to reach knickknacks.

The goal of the pipeline crew is to build a great job and build community as they go. With these ideas and more to come, they appear to be on the right track.
