Start Your Day Going the Right Direction

Kyle “Safety Man” Saunders is back to discuss another attempted implementation of an at home safety program. With mediocre results to show for his glove up and no more monkeys jumping plan, he is pivoting to something a bit different. Safety Man is modelling his new plan after a speech he saw by Admiral McRaven in which he said to start the day with making your bed because it is a way to do and accomplish something before you even leave the house. Since his family already sort of makes their beds, he is focusing on the next logical thing.

Safety Man’s next plan is to implement a First Move Forward SOP for he and his wife’s vehicles, as well as, for this children’s bikes, scooters and big wheels. With this plan, his family will start and end the day intentionally and right. Each day will start safe and each day will end with discipline by being ready for the First Move Forward the following day. Every family member will be responsible for backing in or parking their vehicles and toys in such a way that the first move forward the next day will be forward. In theory it is simple and should be effective.

In reality, it backfired from day one. Most kids want to be first and Safety Man’s are no different. The First Move Forward plan quickly turned into the First Move Forward First for his family. His kids essentially double parked on each other so that they would be the first one rolling the next day. This led to a sibling spat and then some ramming and demolition derby to get the First Move of the day.

In a procedure evaluation and debrief with his wife after a week of trying the First Move Forward, they agreed to cease operation of the First Move Forward plan. Safety Man stated, “We, er I, underestimated the competitiveness and sibling rivalry that all activities include. That rivalry was too great to overcome, even for sake of family safety.” He plans to regroup and lead his at home safety program by example as they test and try out more ideas in the future.
