Study Findings: Build Trust & Build a Better Project

Autodesk and FMI recently shared findings from a study they collaborated on regarding trust amongst major stakeholders on projects. Owners, A/E's, GC's and subs all participated in the research. Overall, there was fairly high trust among project stakeholders. While not earthshaking it finding that high levels of trust help project teams perform at high levels, the report noted projects experienced better collaboration, improved schedule confidence, increased employee retention and more repeat business when trust is prevalent on a project.

To improve trust, the report suggested teams focus on minimizing uncertainty and simplifying how teams collaborate. Several ways that that teams can minimize uncertainty are through making processes consistent, communicating clearly, directly & simply and by being transparent. Collaboration can be simplified via easy & transparent communication and by being solutions focused & not blame focused.
