Always a bit of an art, thick lift asphalt paving is looking to improve the paving process and long term cost of building and maintaining our roadways. The benefits of thick lifts is that pavement placement can take place during colder temperatures and production may be sped up. Production is sped up because one lift of 5" can take less time than 2 lifts of 3" and 2". The skill and artform of placing pavement does change a bit as the physical properties of 5" thick asphalt are different than 3" of asphalt. Rolling patterns and methods may require adjustment and care should be taken to avoid bumps where pavers start and stop. Where bumps are encountered, grinding can quickly and cost effectively make a smooth ride. Overall, thick lift pavements have the ability to reduce overall life cycle pavement costs while improving pavement performance.
