In a recent report based on anecdotal evidence, management for Best of the Rest Construction determined that tools are quickly losing value on jobsites. They are getting old, beat up and generally just looking used and worn out. They don't even have touch screens. When interviewed the motivations for this study and change, CEO Skip Flopper said, "Sometimes you have to think backwards to go forward." What he's noticed is that productivity is stagnant and that workers, especially younger workers, are avoiding tool use whenever possible. Early indications are that this is occurring because traditional tools are not "tech" enough for craft professionals to want to use them. Because nearly everyone (even old and wise workers) are used to all but living on their Smart Phones and other technologies, Mr. Flopper has initiated exploratory testing on one jobsite where all tools have been replaced by tech. What this means is that existing tools are outfitted with a touch screen and renamed tech. This is a small change but hands on tool time on this project has already increased 10%. Productivity has sadly dropped by 10% and it is surmised that this is occurring because workers have figured out how to Bluetooth connect their cell phones to the Smart Tools which results automatically displaying texts and notifications throughout the day. Workers continue working while they stay on top of their texts and notifications, however, they are distracted and productivity suffers. Because Skip Flopper is a self-proclaimed "Innovator" (at worst an "Early Adopter") based on most Innovation Curves, he is sure that he will be able to lead his team in finding additional technology to replace functioning tools and moderately productive techs. Mr. Flopper loves analogies and in closing our interview he said, "My company may have taken a few steps in the wrong direction and stumbled over some controlled access zone barriers, but I am confident we will regain our balance before we tumble off the edge and lose everything."
