We All Want to Build Our Own Destiny

All construction projects have their own challenges like exacting specs, challenging work environments, owners who are not familiar with the construction process and finding the right people then leading them right once they are on the team. For construction pros, there are no shortage of seen and unforeseen challenges. COVID added a challenge that most of us didn't see coming and working through it has involved new plans and lots of adjustments. Always challenging, leadership has become even more challenging with all the concerns and variables COVID has brought to work and home life. What makes current times challenging is that as individuals most of us like to have some control or feel like we have some control over our lives. Without some sense of control we can feel vulnerable and helpless. COVID has made this control more difficult to feel and attain.

Great leaders know this and are good at giving people control of success at work through clarity and transparency. This is mostly common sense but reminders to stay with basics and common sense can be helpful, especially, during uncommon times. Leaders should be direct and open when discussing the status of companies or projects and the performance needs of each team member. Good leaders also share personal concerns which shows,

"They are vulnerable - like the rest of us - and vulnerability helps people connect."

A leader that shows a bit of vulnerability often endears themselves to their team. Another thing smart leaders do is be honest about not knowing everything or having all of the answers. Asking for help engages and empowers others on the leaders team to help steer the project or company to success.
