When Your Gut Beats Your Brain

In the right situation, our gut instinct is better than an abundance of data.

More information isn't always better. That's according to a recent Harvard Business Review article on decision making related to innovation. Experienced and knowledgeable leaders can combine "gut instinct" with some heuristics (think trial & error, rule of thumb and educated guess) to make good decisions when evaluating innovations and new ideas. "Big data" is growing in our industry but it's hard to gather good and large quantities of data that can be used to extrapolate trends and aid in decision making. Given the number of variables in construction it's pretty darn impossible to turn decision making over to "big data" models and tech innovations. In many instances, our gut beats the smarts of our brain's data analysis when making decisions. Check out the article linked above to see what the "nerds" think about analytical decision making in real life.
